Water Damage Mitigation Tips
Here is a list of things to check in your home to minimize the potential for a water damage emergency:
Water Damage Prevention Checklist
- Water heating system – Check for leaks around the base of your heating system or if the system is not heating water well it needs to be replaced. If the blow-off valve goes off, something might be wrong.
- Radiators – If you smell a strong odor when the heat comes on, look for any leaks.
- Thermostats – We recommend you keep temps no lower than 60-65 to prevent burst pipes. From our experience, if the temperature is set lower than that, furnaces have a harder time maintaining the lower temperature.
- Rooms with pipes – Rooms with any water supply should have a heater in them.
- Wash machine – Change any rubber hoses to steel braided. Rubber hoses tend to bubble and burst.
- Water softeners/water filtration devices – Check for leaks.
- Sewer – If you’re buying a new house, consider having your sewer inspected for outdated plumbling materials. Watch for unusual odors in your basement. If your sinks, toilets, and tubs aren’t draining like they used to, it could be a sign there is a problem.
Butte became one of Montana’s first major cities for its mining production. Butte’s population was at its peak in the 1920s and houses were built rapidly to accommodate the mining workforce. With that said, many of Butte’s houses are very old, particularly in what we call Uptown Butte. Because of the age of these homes, it is best to have a thorough inspection.
